Rivers Inn on Clarence Street and a Londis on Edinburgh Drive, both in Staines, were rated 1. Of 38 Spelthorne ratings since 1 September, 31 are 5s.

Two Staines food businesses were given a food hygiene rating of 1 in September, the second lowest score. One is Rivers Inn, a restaurant on Clarence Street. The other is the Londis and Post Office on Edinburgh Drive, which trades on the register as Ashford Food And Wine.

They were the only low scores among 38 ratings dated since 1 September across Spelthorne. Thirty-one of the 38 are 5s, the top rating.

We read the Food Standards Agency’s register in full for Spelthorne Borough Council on 1 November. It lists 774 businesses.

The two businesses rated 1

A rating of 1 means “major improvement is necessary”. Inspectors score three things separately, and the register publishes each score.

Business Where Rated Food handling Premises Management
Rivers Inn Units 3 and 4, Thames Edge Court, Clarence Street, Staines 4 Sep Generally satisfactory Improvement necessary Major improvement necessary
Ashford Food And Wine (Londis Post Office) 39 to 41 Edinburgh Drive, Laleham, TW18 1PJ 15 Sep Generally satisfactory Generally satisfactory Major improvement necessary

In both cases the weakest score is for confidence in management. That covers the business’s food safety records, procedures and staff training. Food handling itself was rated generally satisfactory at both.

Neither business has published a right to reply on the register. Any business can publish one, and can ask the council for a re-inspection once it has made improvements. A new rating would replace this one.

The other ratings below 5

Business Where Rated Rating
IFG Group trading as Dolce Ltd at Echelford Primary School Park Road, Ashford 15 Sep 3

Onde Onde Staines Food Court, High Street, Staines 21 Sep 4
Tops Pizza 11 to 13 Church Street, Staines 21 Sep 4
So Noodle 90 High Street, Staines 24 Sep 4

The 3 at Echelford is for the school’s catering contractor, not the school. It was the only school kitchen rated since September that did not get a 5.

Where only a postcode district is shown, the register publishes no street address. That is usual for businesses run from home, such as cake makers and caterers.

Why October looks so quiet

Only five ratings on the register are dated October, against 33 dated September. The register shows 30 in August and 25 in July.

That gap is mostly timing. A business has a right to appeal before its rating goes public, so ratings, and lower ones in particular, can appear weeks after the inspection. Five clean October results today are not a promise that every October inspection went well. We will pick up any that appear late in next month’s round-up.

What it means for you

  • Check before you book or order. Every business’s current score, and the date of its last inspection, is on the FSA’s ratings site. Home bakers and mobile caterers are rated too, which is worth knowing before you order a Christmas cake or book a party caterer.
  • A rating is a snapshot. It reflects hygiene on the day of the inspection: how food is handled, the state of the premises and how food safety is managed. It does not judge the food itself.
  • Businesses can respond. Any business can appeal, publish a right to reply on the register, or ask for a re-inspection after making improvements.

Spelthorne Borough Council’s environmental health team carries out the inspections. If you are worried about a food business, you can report it through the FSA’s report a food problem service.
