The fastest Staines train reaches Waterloo in 37 minutes, and an annual season costs £3,452. Times, fares, and why Ashford and Sunbury are cheaper.
Staines is a junction, not a terminus, and that shapes everything about commuting from here. Three routes meet at the station: into London Waterloo, west to Reading, and north on the short branch to Windsor. All of them are run by South Western Railway, which has been in public ownership since 25 May 2025, when it became the first operator transferred to DfT Operator under the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024. Tickets and timetables were unaffected by the change.
How long the train to Waterloo actually takes
37 to 39 minutes on the fast services. Off peak the fastest booked time we found was 37 minutes, on the 10:58 arriving at Waterloo at 11:35. In the morning peak the fastest were 39 minutes, on the 07:28 and the 07:58.
The number that catches people out is the spread. Staines has trains that take 55 minutes over the same distance, and they run in the same hour as the fast ones. In a typical off-peak hour there are three departures for Waterloo: two taking 37 to 41 minutes and one taking 55. At peak the service thickens to five or six an hour, and the fast and slow pattern continues.
So the practical rule is simple. Look at the arrival time, not the departure time. Leaving Staines eight minutes later can get you into Waterloo eighteen minutes earlier.

Staines is inside the contactless pay as you go area, so you can touch in with a card or phone and pay the same as a paper single. There is no need to buy in advance for a day trip.

Is an annual season worth it?
Only if you travel more than about three and a half days a week.
An annual season costs £3,452. An Anytime Day Return costs £21.80. Divide one by the other and the season pays for itself on the 159th peak return journey of the year. Allowing six weeks off for holidays and bank holidays, that is 3.4 days a week.
If you travel off peak, the case for a season is weaker again. At £14.80 an Off-Peak Day Return you would need 234 return journeys to break even, which is more than five a week.
The other stations in the borough
Spelthorne has four stations and Staines is not the cheapest of them. Stanwell has none at all; its nearest is Ashford.

Ashford is the borough’s bargain: one minute slower than Staines on the fastest train and £288 a year cheaper on a season. Sunbury is £352 cheaper again but its season is priced to London Waterloo only, so it does not cover arrival at another London terminus; the London Terminals version from Sunbury costs £3,756. Shepperton sits at the end of a branch, which is why its fastest train is eight minutes slower than Staines despite being closer to London in a straight line.
Sunbury and Shepperton trains also run in two patterns, one direct and one with a change at Twickenham. On the morning we sampled, the 07:35 from Sunbury reached Waterloo at 08:24 by changing at Twickenham, in 49 minutes, while the direct 07:35 took 58.
The other two routes out of Staines
West to Reading, about 48 minutes, roughly two an hour, for an Anytime Day Single of £15.30. Egham is four minutes away on that line, at £2.30 off peak, which makes the train the sensible way to cross the borough boundary into Runnymede.
North to Windsor & Eton Riverside, 14 minutes, twice an hour, for an Off-Peak Day Single of £3.60. It is the shortest useful train journey in the borough and the cheapest day out on this page.
Getting to Heathrow
There is no rail link from Staines to Heathrow, which is the great gap in this town’s transport. The airport is four miles away and the train cannot take you.
What does run is the X442 bus, operated by Carlone Buses, between Staines Elmsleigh bus station and Heathrow Terminal 5, via Ashford and Stanwell Moor. On a normal weekday the first departure from Staines is at 03:55 and services run through the day at roughly half-hourly intervals from mid-morning. Check the live timetable before you set out, because it is a commercial service and not a TfL one, so Oyster and TfL caps do not apply.
